Doctors barring patients from writing online reviews

Web sites that allow patients to rate and review the services of their doctors are becoming more and more common. But many of these online reviews are highly critical of doctors, and now some doctors are fighting back by asking patients to agree to what amounts to a gag order that bars them from posting negative comments online. Doctors say the sniping comments--often posted anonymously--can ruin their reputations, and because of privacy laws, doctors can't respond to them. But consumer advocates say that forcing patients to sign waivers before receiving treatment is like asking patients to choose between medical care and their First Amendment rights.
