FDA to check old medical devices

In a step that critics have long requested, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin checking the safety of some of the riskiest medical devices. Some of these devices--including artificial lung membranes, defibrillators, and various pacemaker components--have been in use since before the FDA's medical safety laws were put into effect in 1976. Prior to this law, many medical devices were put on the market with minimal testing. The FDA now says it will reevaluate these devices to ensure that they meet its requirements for both safety and effectiveness.  Read full story >
