According to the report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health, women are nearly twice as likely as men to suffer from major depression, three times more likely to attempt suicide, and two to three times more likely to experience anxiety disorders than men. Among the actions recommended by report's authors are the need to improve how primary care doctors and mental health professionals communicate about their patients' mental health needs, to underscore the essential importance of women's mental health to overall well-being, and to recognize the role of trauma and violence against women and its impact on mental illness.
