Dementia drugs linked to heart trouble, falls

Drugs that are prescribed for Alzheimer's disease, such as Aricept and Exelon, may cause more heart trouble than previously believed, a Canadian study suggests. Researchers studied province-wide data and found that patients who used cholinesterase inhibitors were hospitalized for fainting twice as much as dementia patients who did not take those drugs. Patients taking the cholinesterase inhibitors were also 49 percent more likely to need a permanent pacemaker, and an 18 percent increased risk of having a hip replacement because of damage sustained during fainting spells.
