Weekly curry meals may help ward off dementia

Eating a traditional Indian curry once or twice a week may help ward off dementia, researchers say. The key ingredient in curries--curcumin--is a component of the spice turmeric, which has been shown to help prevent the formation of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain that may cause Alzheimer's. The animal study conducted at Duke University found that mice who ate the equivalent of two or three curry meals per week were less likely to develop dementia. Critics say that eating a healthy diet overall is more likely to prevent disease than concentrating on one food, but the study's lead scientist says that adding some curry meals to an overall healthy diet may show the same benefit for humans.
