Hormone may affect neurological disease risk in women

Changes in the amount of estrogen at adolescence and menopause may be behind women's susceptibility to neurological diseases such as ADHD, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's. Researchers say the hormone changes affect dopamine transmitters in the brain, which are linked to neurological disorders. The study's results could have an impact on the way women are treated for these disorders, researchers say, and it may affect the way that other neurological disorders--such as postpartum depression--are viewed as well.
