Drugmakers pour $40 million into healthcare reform debate

Statistics show that the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), a lobbying group that represents 32 brandname drug companies, and its member companies have spent $40 million lobbying Congress as the lawmakers work to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system. A report required of all lobbying organizations filed Monday showed that PhRMA spent about $2 million a month in the past three months, a crucial period in the healthcare debate in the House and Senate. But when figures reported from PhRMA's member drug companies is added to the total, it adds up to $40 million spent lobbying Congress during the months of April, May, and June alone.  Read full story >
