Report sheds light on nursing home psychotropic use

(Kaiser Health News) UPDATED 2009-11-11

According to an investigative report in the Chicago Tribune, many nursing home residents in Illinois and possibly other states are being put on dangerous psychotropic drugs without consent. The report found 1,200 violations in Illinois since 2001-including cases where the drugs caused injury and death to nursing home residents. Experts say caregivers should be aware of these types of problems and of the side effects that such medications can cause in the frail and elderly.
