Yahoo, Google want more leeway for drug advertising

Web giants Google and Yahoo have joined forces with the pharmaceutical industry to encourage the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to change the guidelines governing online drug advertising. Current FDA guidelines require both the benefits and risks of a drug every time it is mentioned in an ad. But drugmakers say these rules hamper advertising on the Internet given the space constraints for ads on Web pages. Google and Yahoo want the FDA to allow drug ads to provide simple links that would then take users to a page that contain the required complete drug information. Last year, only three percent of the estimated $4.3 billion spent by the pharmaceutical industry on marketing was spent on online advertising.
