Mediterranean Diet May Protect Aging Brains from Damage

Eating a Mediterranean-style diet rich in foods such as nuts, olive oil, fish, and fruit can not only protect against heart disease, but it can also help protect the aging brain from damage that causes cognitive decline. In a new study, scientists studied brain scans of 712 men and women over age 80, looking for signs of damage from "infarcts," or areas where tissue had died because of a lack of blood supply. When they compared these scans to the patients' diets, investigators found that those who had followed a Mediterranean-style diet had fewer brain infarcts on their MRIs that people who followed a non-Mediterranean diet.
