Alzheimer's Caregivers Are More Likely to Develop Dementia

Caring for a spouse with dementia appears to increase your risk of suffering from the disease. Researchers reporting in the Journal of The American Geriatrics Society followed 1,221 married couples for 12 years and found that spouses were six times more likely to develop dementia themselves. Experts say this suggests that the stress, grief, and physical exhaustion of caregiving may be an even greater environmental factor in the development of the disorder than they previously believed.
