Alzheimer's Drug Failure Casts Doubts on Brain Plaque Theory

A clinical trial into the experimental Alzheimer's medication semagacestat ended this week when the drug was found to increase symptoms of memory loss, rather than decrease them. Drugmaker Eli Lilly says the most disappointing news is that their drug is one of many in development that blocks beta amyloid in the brain, and those other experimental medications may also worsen dementia symptoms. Experts say this is a blow to researchers who have believed that blocking the protein holds the key for treating Alzheimer's.
