Tight Blood Sugar Control Doesn't Stave off Dementia
(CBS News) UPDATED 2011-09-29
Diabetics have a higher risk of developing dementia than other adults, and tight blood-sugar control does not seem to lower that risk, a new study suggests. The study, published in The Lancet, found no difference in cognitive decline between patients who had kept rigorous control of their blood sugar level and those who had kept a "standard" control on blood sugar. Experts say that this suggests that diabetics do not need to spend extra time, money, or effort on maintaining blood sugars down below standard goals.
