Deep Brain Stimulation for OCD

Eileen Bailey Health Guide
  • A recent Dutch study indicated improvement in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. The study involved 16 patients with severe OCD. The patients experienced severe symptoms for approximately 16 hours per day, were incapciptated and unable to work.

Electrodes were implanted into a section of the brain and activated on and off for longer than one year. Even during the first month of this treatment, patients indicated a significant reduction of symptoms, up to 50% less symptoms. Some patients showed an immense reduction of 90% of symptoms.

This study was on a small group of patients, however, the results were significant and researchers believe further studies need to be completed to verify the results.
