Performance Review Anxiety: Tips to Help You Cope with an Upcoming Performance Review

By Eileen Bailey, Health Guide Tuesday, December 06, 2011
It's almost the end of the year and for many people, that means the dreaded annual performance review. Many employees feel nervous thinking about what their managers might. For those with anxiety, this time is even more stressful. Those with social anxiety disorder have a hard time hearing criticism....

Sound advice here, Eileen. I spent many years as a reviewer, sometimes dreading the process. I know different places have different strategies and some are more formal than others and that will make a difference. The approach where I worked was more conversational but using a framework to guide the discussion. The biggest tension was in the first few minutes, sometimes half-hour. People often portrayed a sense of defence if not by their tone, by their body-language. Once we got through that, things would almost inevitably be better for both of us. So yes, it's two way traffic and sometimes the nerves affect both.

As someone who has also been on the receiving end I sympathise with those who get a raw deal too!

Thanks Jerry for sharing your own personal experience. I think we often believe that we are the only one who is nervous and forget the other person is frequently just as nervous, if not more, than we are.
