Overcoming Social Anxiety through use of the 12 Steps of Social Anxiety Anonymous

By Silvia Saturday, March 27, 2010

Social Anxiety Anonymous is a Nonprofit organization that provides free support groups and a free ebook to people struggling with social anxiety problems (including social phobia, social agoraphobia, avoidant personality disorder, Shyness Problems and Paruresis). Social Anxiety Anonymous has a 12 Step program of recovery (with some additional tools included, some of which are very similar to CBT and some of which are very different), called the Social Anxiety Anonymous 12 Steps and Tools of recovery that are discussed in it's support groups.

These support groups are gentle, non-pressuring, and participants have shared that they can help enormously in overcoming one's social anxiety symptoms. To make progress with ones Social Anxiety Problem, the suggestion is to attend Social Anxiety Anonymous support groups on a consistent basis. It is also suggested that one read Social Anxiety Anonymous free ebook and other recommended literature on an ongoing basis.

The overall tone of Social Anxiety Anonymous is non-pressuring. A supportive and gentle environment in the support groups is reflective of the literature, allowing for gentle progress in overcoming social anxiety problems. A key part of the program of recovery is learning to let go of being extremely hard on oneself (which can be a root source of the Social Anxiety problem, along with control issues).

Subjects worked on include perfectionism and it's relationship to social anxiety; understanding the relationship between trust (or faith) and social anxiety is also explored, and also the utilization of social anxiety and dream work-- learning how to connect with one's dreams for a better life (many with chronic social anxiety have given up on such dreams for a better life, believing that their social anxiety will never get better. In particular, claiming ones dreams of a better life are seen as a key key part of overcoming social anxiety.

Social Anxiety Anonymous is a nonprofit organization. Click here see the Social Anxiety Anonymous (free) ebook or to attend it's (free) support groups for overcoming social anxiety.
