I am dealing with this very issue right now. I have dealt with elevated blood pressure for the past couple years, mostly due to my horrible diet (I overeat really bad foods when I'm anxious). I have improved my diet and have been on meds. However, when I am anxious my bp goes through the roof, no matter what i eat or meds I take. Since high bp is dangerous no matter what the cause it becomes more important to deal with the anxiety. However, I find the physical symptoms are hard to control. I can calm myself mentally with self talk and relaxation but it is hard to control my anxiety when it come to interrupted sleep. The early morning hours are always the worst for me. It can take me hours to calm down.
Hi, Merely Me. I totally believe anxiety can make us ill. I believe I've read that it can also cause weight gain because of the extra cortisol our bodies produce in response to stress - and it goes right to the stomach!
One odd reaction I've had to stress has been hives. A few times, I got them all over and there was no other reason to have had them other than that I was going through some particularly difficult times. I didn't even realize I was all that anxious until someone pointed it out. It's funny how we can fool or trick ourselves in our thinking, but the body never lies!
