Hurricane Irene ptsd

By dewalt.17 Friday, September 30, 2011

I have been thru 2 floods in the past 20 yrs. I volunteered in the 96 floods via Red Cross.  These last 2 storms Irene and Lee have been devistating to my home town, even though I am on higher ground I see the devistation around me and have anxiety to the extent it feels more like chronic stress disorder.  It is @ least once a week we have flash flood warnings and it is taking a toll on everyone affected.  I recently went to my mental health clinic for med review and just went off on the pyschiatrist and pretty much told him what I thought of him.  His arrogance, and bordom of hearing the same stories repeatedly.  Which he has always been since I started treatment 4 yrs. ago.  I have been in a funk for a while now I don't want to go any where do any thing just want to be left alone.  I take my meds daily yet I feel like I could care less about any thing.  I get hostile frustrated angry or just fall apart.  Hope it passes soon....

Hey there

I really think anyone who has lived through these sorts of experiences is going to have some anxiety about it.  I know I would.  I am sorry to hear that the person who is supposed to be helping you is not showing you the appropriate response and empathy.

When is the anxiety the worst?  What are the worst triggers for you?

Keep on talking to us.  Glad to see you on the site.  I feel that it has been awhile...been wondering how you have been doing.

Hi Merely me,

Usually it is little things that I let build up inside or feel as though I am being attacked or picked out to harass, thats when I get anxious, frustrated and angry.  When the floods hit I felt so helpless,so I decided to do a petition for saving our towns due to lack of maintenance of the rivers.  I was told by the mayor of the town who needed to be contacted from state, county, and municpalities and passed that info along.  Honestly I think there is a lot of red tape and politcal crap, but mailed in the petitions and hope for the best.  Seems like every other day it rains then we get flash flood warnings, I have been on high alert ever since.

The worst part is my boyfriend doesn't understand my issues so I emailed him about Depression, anxiety and ptsd, he just doesn't get it or doesn't want to...  Been there before and at this point no one who hasn't experienced it can't possibly understand.  I just wish he would give me a break, as I wish I could be more relaxed about things.

Thanks for your response

Have a dry and nice weekend
