Mom can't protect her son now

By dewalt.17 Monday, November 09, 2009

Since the shootings in Ft.Hood Tx. my aunt is in constant worry for her youngest son, my cousin who is currently in Ft. Bliss Tx.  He is to be deployed in March, 2010 as if the fact that he has joined the U.S. Army and the recent tragedy weren't stressful enough on his parents, his mom found out that he will be in an artillery unit in Afghanistan in stead of the patriot missle defense.   He told his dad and brother but not his mom for fear she would panic.  She is more upset that it was kept a secret from her.

I am sure his reasons were to keep her from worrying, but thats what any family member does in a situation like this, as his parents it must be very difficult.  I try to be supportive for them but there are no guarentees.  It's war and I suggested we gather the community and friends to send care pkgs. to the troops in his unit and even to the troops in general,  maybe it will help her cope with it.  If any one has any other suggestions please feel free to post them, it would be greatly appreciated.

As a parent, I can understand fully your aunt's worry and concern about her son. I don't think, no matter how old or independent our children are, we ever stop worrying about them and their safety. It must be difficult for your aunt.

My cousin is currently stationed in Iraq and my son's 7th grade class recently made cards to send to soldiers to wish happy holidays. I think any time we can remember to thank the soldier's for their service it is good.

Thank you Eileen I will suggest the idea to her as a matter of fact I will contact the high school that he graduated from to see if the kids there would be interested in sending cards there a few young men I know who are currently in Iraq and Afghanistan and some due to be deployed soon.

What  great idea... thanks again..
