panic....

By Marishka Monday, March 08, 2010

Hi all again,

OK, I want to describe what happens to me in a panic or anxiety attack...not sure which is which I suppose...

it has been happening the last week pretty much on and off (mostly on)  every day...a few things can set it off....mostly, it is when an event happens (for example, a friend has not called back in a week and a half) then I begin imagining the worst...she is mad at me, I did something wrong, she doesn't want to be friends anymore (mind reading)...etc...I start there, then I go to I would feel too bad if she didn't want to be friends anymore, I like her and her friendship is so important to me, everything is going to go wrong from now on (future projecting, catastrosizing, generalizing) , I did something wrong to deserve this, now I will suffer and suffer nonstop and it will never stop, I must be bad, now I remember  all the stuff I did wrong....oh, no, I  guess God is punishing me and  the future is going to get worse and worse...(future projecting again)

many times 'rejection' sets this pattern of thinking off (or when a door closes for one reason or another...) other times, it is an image of something that I had a really traumatic experience with in the past....often times it is a harsh, scary, intimidating voice...reminds me of my father's voice...

it can be a word, a name,  etc etc etc....then when I get the panic going, I tend to notice the triggers more and then they trigger me more...

many of these 'triggers' one soon after the next triggers my panic thinking...so does running low on money!  seems to be millions of triggers!

OK, does this sound familiar to anyone?  I am just starting to get involved on this site...so I'm sure this is nothing new...I have to read posts...but my panic is now and I needed to write about it...

thanks,

Marishka

What a great job you have done of explaining how your panic begins to build and how it impacts your thoughts! It is great that you are able to understand what you are doing and why. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which works to help you to change your thought process, may be helpful to you.

I know you have said you are looking for ways to help now and cognitive behavioral therapy is not going to work overnight. I am giving you some links to posts that discuss some things you can now to help manage your attacks. In the meantime, looking for a therapist that works with CBT can help you begin to work on changing thought processes to help reduce your panic attacks.
