I was diagnosed with agoraphobia and panic attacks in 1987. Although many of my symptoms were evident prior to 1987, the entire picture was not put together until I saw a psychiatrist. My first round of agoraphobia with panic attacks was from 1987-1989. I have a brief "respite" and then my second reoccurence occured in 1991 and I have been recovering from 1991 under the care of a psychiatrist and on and off psychologist. Through treatment with medication and counseling I have made steps toward my recovery. I ran a support group for several years for people with panic disorder. I also became an advocate and worked in the public mental health system. Again it sounds like I had recovery. Everywhere I went on meetings or travel, I had to have my safe person (s) accompany me. My full time work was from 1998-2000 and turned out that was actually a huge setback for me in many ways. I now work part time. I still have many "restrictions" with my agoraphobia, but am making progress.
