Overcoming Anxiety Hurdles

By Jerry Kennard, Health Pro Monday, December 19, 2011
When anxiety reaches a point where help is sought there's often a sense that a major hurdle has been crossed. However, this is tempered by the fact that you've finally had to admit a certain level of defeat in admitting you aren't coping. Even so, you've done the right thing by seeking help, so is th...

Hi Jerry,

It's a pleasure to meet you.  I am currently a Health Central Community member and have only posted in the Schizophrenia section since I have a diagnosis of Schizo-affective disorder.

The symptom that I struggle with most is the anxiety.  According to the community expert, anxiety is the worst symptom to experience from this disorder.  I have experienced most if not all of the symptoms of schizophrenia and I have to agree that the anxiety has been the toughest to deal with.

I am currently taking Librium along with Geodon, Lamictal and Celexa.  I was taking Vistaril from about Nov. 2008 until May of this year.  It just didn't do the job anymore.  The Librium seems to be working fine but along with taking this medication, I attend cognitive therapy twice a month and visit my pdoc once a month.  I also started attending NAMI Support Group Meetings every Thursday and I plan to start attending a meditation class on Sundays.

I started hitting the gym again  fter taking about 5 months off.  My mom was in ICU for the past 5 months until she passed last month so I just didn't have the time.  I was with her everyday, actually I only went to therapy once and saw my pdoc maybe once as well during that stretch.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and I think you'll be seeing more of me.  I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Kind Regards,

Rene Victor

Hi Rene, Well, you can't be accused of standing back from treatment options. That combination of medication, cognitive therapy and exercise ticks so many of the right boxes. I'm interested how you find the exercise along with meds? Some people find they compete too much and the temptation is to back off exercise. Anyway, thanks for the intro and your comments. Jerry
