How is it you make the jump between choking conviction to i'm not going to choke. And please you sccessful folk drop me a line with your learning to eat again personal tips. I've been unable to eat solid food for 9 months, I'm 5'8" and i weigh 110 pounds now. Any help is really appreciated.

Hi aydinmuh,

I just found out today what Globus Hystericus is, even though I have suffered a milder form of it for the last seven years. I hope my sharing will help, please remember two things: ALL panic/anxiety disorders take time to heal. I have been in therapy for two years with a wonderful doctor, and am tremendously better, but still need to grow. Secondly, my Globus also becomes worse when I get more stressed, but that just proves to me that it CAN get better b/c I always recover when I relax later! I was kidnapped ten years ago in Mexico City and went from being the calmest, friendliest person you ever met, to the most distrusting and scared person, literally over-night. One day, three years later, I suddenly started FEELING like I was going to choke on everything I put in my mouth when I went out and had lunch with an aquintance. I had absolutely no clue why. Eventually everything caught up with me, but I found a good doctor now and am working through this. It wasnt untill this month when a close friend finally asked me: "Did something bad happen to you when you were eating one time?" To my, and everyone elses shock, I relplied "YES, I was having dinner at a restaurant, and walked straight out into the cab where I was abducted!" The moral of my story here is to remember that anxiety is a fear of something, ask yourself what you could possibly be afraid of? I find that if I take a pill of chamomile tea, I eat much better, too, since it tends to relax you. Good luck, you have a long road ahead of you, but I promise you will find more strength with every step you take forward.

You are the first person I've came in contact with who even knows what globus is.  And I am so happy that someone else knows how this feels.  I was diagnosed with having it too and I struggle to eat.  I am also age 23, 5'8" and I weigh 125 lbs.  I've lost about 8 lbs. since the problems started.  Please send me an email and we can discuss this together.  My email is siliconeandstars@yahoo.com and my name is Amanda.

I also am relieved to see some kind of response to your problem because I have just begun to experience this condition myself and I must say it is miserable.  I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression 3 years ago, but it wasn't until last month that I had problems with this feeling in my throat and choking on my food.  Sometimes the feeling is so bad that I will have a heaving session before it finally subsides.   My diet also seems to have been reduced to potatoes and anything soft that won't feel course going down my throat.  It takes me forever to get a meal down.  Having anxiety is bad enough, but this really makes it even worse.  I would love to correspond with any of you about this condition.  You can email me at babygoojo3200@peoplepc.com.

Here are three success stories I have found.  I will post each one separately.

"After a year, of counseling, zoloft, and time, it managed to go away, but it still comes back in times of stress.  I take things as they come now and its easier because I understand why I get the feeling in my throat.  When I first got it I had no idea what was happening to me so it was terryfing and really scary which as you probably know by now, only prolongs the globus.  So now worrying about the globus keeps you having the globus symptoms. Go figure!  Well, anyway, hope this helps."

When I first developed globus I literally went hysterical.  I didn't understand what it was and the doctors were saying it's anxiety, but at the time I didn't feel severe anxiety like when I would have a panic attack.  I knew they were wrong and I thought I must have a tumor or a swollen thyroid.  Well, I eventually went to so many doctors and had so many exams and finally had a scope down my throat and then my ent said, "you have globus."  It was the first time I had actually heard a doctor use clinical name for my distressing symptom.  He told me it was complicated, but that it was not terminal.  He said doesn't they make you feel better.  At the time, no!  It is very distressing.  And I needed hope. And I needed to hear someone elses testimony!  So I found some.  And even though I have to take Klonopin to help my anxiety over my throat.  I can see that I am not where I was a year ago.  I can eat anything. I swallow huge calcium/magnesium pills.  My depression is leaving.  And I know that by nourishing my nervous system this lump will leave.

"Hi, I suffered from the same symptoms about 2 years ago.  I went to so many drs and they couldn't figure it out.  I could not swallow so I stopped eating and drinking all together.  I lost 40 pounds and was really emaciated.  I became really ill and was in and out of the hospital.  I was literally dying and the drs were worried.  Needless to say, I took a leave of absence in school and didn't return for a long time.

After making sure that it wasn't cancer or webs in my throat, I went to seen an acupuncturist.  It took about 6 months but slowly I started to recover.  And started to eat a little too.  I also started to exercise a lot.

Apparently, there is a strong link between depression or other mood disorders and globus hestericus.  I believe this is true because I ended up being diagnosed with depression later on.

I am not a doctor, but just wanted to share my experience with you in hopes that you might not have to suffer as long as I did before seeking the right help.  Best wishes in your recovery."

There is a website for Maximal Living, by UAB's Mark A. Stafford, M.D., F.A.C.P.

It is titled "Appreciating the Lump in Your Throat."  Please read this.

This is a doctor who experienced globus while in school and has learned to use it as his "stress thermometer."  Whenever he feels that lump, he knows he is upset, anxious, angry, or afraid.  He is disturbed.  And then he tries to discover what has triggered it. If he judges correctly, the globus fades away.  He says, "Learn to do the detective work, uncover hidden emotions, resolve the issues and put your mind and body to rest."

Choker but working on it!
11/23/09 1:24pm

I have been "choking" for about a year since my daughter was almost raped. I have not been aware that I did not deal with that stress & other accumulated anxiety but fortunately a good GI Dr. diagnosed me w/out doing all the endoscopy.  I am on antidepressants that are slowly helping. I am also considering psychiatric counseling since the antidepressants are working. This is obviously a mental/stress/anxiety issue.

I just knew I had a tumor or early Parkinsons so this is a relief diagnosis. However, it makes me wonder what all I'm harboring that is coming out in these physical symptoms.

I am a Christian and regularly have devotion time & think that takes care of much of what's going on as I surrender my load.   I would like to hear what his working for others & am so happy for internet posts to learn I'm not alone.  I also have suffered for years with speech problems, like my muscles tighten up & I sound hoarse.  My neck is apparently my place of all my stresses manifesting!
