Q: a friend is on xanax and has been told to wean themself off high dosage over a long period

a friend is on xanax and has been told to wean themself off high dosage over a long period of time.  Is there an alternate medication that can be taken and then to wean off the drug rather quickly?

This type of medication should be slowly lowered to stop or reduce any symptoms of withdrawal.
