Q: My oncologist has prescribed this to help with hot flashes and mood swings due to taking arimidex.

He has prescribed 75 mg of effexor(venlafaxine) 1 bid.  Will this help reduce having hot flases and moodness?  My body temperature was 97.6 before arimidex and now it is 98.7.  I am freezing my family out of the house.

Dear Debby,

For those that don't know a "hot flash" is defined as "a sudden brief sensation of heat, often over the entire body, caused by a transient dilation of the blood vessels of the skin."  I'm not an expert on hot flashes, but I don't think that they affect overall body temperature all that much (both temperatures you noted are within the normal range).

SSRI's supposedly reduce the hot flashes, and Effexor in particular has the most research asssociated with it for this purpose.

I hope you feel better soon!
