Q: I have been taking Zoloft & Buspar for 13 yrs and recently have been experincing Tinnitus.

Recently I have been experiencing Tinnitus. It goes from mild to Screaming! After researching this I found that my medication could be the culprit. I have stopped taking Ibuprophen and am weaning off of caffeine which causes excrucitating headaches which I could really use some Ibuprophen!

I went to an ENT who basically told me it was something I had to live with. WHAT!? I was referred to a hearing center, however, Medicare does not cover Tinnitus. So I can't afford alternative treatment because of lack of finances. So bio-feedback, acupuncture is out of the question.

This has all been so discouraging. My doctor prescribed 2 mg. Valium twice a day, however, I take it once a day because I know how addictive it is. This is for short term until I can find out what I can do.

I am going to talk to my primary care physician and ask to discontinue Zoloft & Buspar. I know I will need to slowly withdraw from these meds.

I am a 55 yr. old female who hopes it is not too late to improve or even irradicate the Tinnitus. After living a sedentary life, I have begun to be proactive in moving my body more. And also being a little more wise in my nutrition. In other words, I hope it isn't too late to be healthier!

My question is this: Does anyone know an alternative antidepressant that does not cause Tinnitus? And I would invite anyone to discuss their experiences, strength & hope!  Thank you.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am sorry you are having a difficult time. I have had tinnitus from time to time (from aspirin use for migraines) and know how difficult it can be to live with.

According to the site tinnitusformula.com, many antidepressants can cause this or make it worse. An older antidepressant, Remeron, does not seem to cause tinnutis or make it worse.

However, I am not a medical professional and this would be something you should discuss with your physician, as you had planned to.
