Q: why is my anxiety the worst early in the morning and at bed time?

I have had anxiety disorder before and haven't taken meds for it for 4 years and things were fine.  Lately the past few months with the economy and stress of getting married, work, school, family etc.  I didn't pay attention to the warning signs that I was starting to have problems again until 2 weeks ago I got sick and that started the anxiety attacks.  I have been to 5 doctors had 2 ultrasounds done and all kinds of other tests on hormones and thyroid.  All were normal.  The anxiety has been so bad I took this whole week off work.  I want my life back.  I wake up at 6 in the morning full of energy and it takes along time to come down and I do alright throughout the day but at night I get really anxious again. Why?

There are many people that have increased anxiety early in the morning or at night. Some of the theories on why anxiety can be higher when first waking up are: not getting enough sleep, drop in blood sugar, anxiety or dread of upcoming day.

 

If you are not working with a therapist, you may also want to try cognitive behavioral therapy to help relieve your anxiety. In the meantime, it is important to try to discover the possible triggers.

 

Are you awakening worried about the upcoming day? Try doing some relaxation exercises before you even get out of bed. Do some deep breathing or meditation for a few minutes to help you remain calm.

 

Are you experiencing a drop in blood sugar? Keep some high protein or complex carbohydrate snacks next to your bed and eat slowly upon waking.

 

If you are not sleeping well (since you are also experiencing anxiety at night time) talk with your doctor and therapist about what you can do to help you get a good night's sleep.

 

Remind yourself you are safe. Talk yourself through your anxiety.

 

Lastly, talk with your doctor about what you are experiencing.
