Q: anxiety...alprazolam or ssri?

What is best in your opinion to use for free floating anxiety? I also have mitral valve prolapse which I take Innopran xl for.

I have taken .05 mg of Alprazolam for many years now, 3 times per day.

I have researched some about ssri's such as Lexapro. Which would be best in your opinion to use?

Thanks

Cherokee - You are asking a very important question! Unfortunately, answering it is difficult. First, every individual metabolizes medication differently and so what works well for one person may not work as well for another. Second, how you define "best" is crucial. Does "best" mean greatest relief of symptoms, fewest side effects, absence of potential for addiction, or all of the above? You need to consider all of these issues in order to make the best choice for you.  If you have not been seen by a psychiatrist, I think you should consult one given that you have already been diagnosed with MVP. Hope this is helpful.
