Q: I MUST get off of Clonazepam NOW! Slowly & Safely. Please help me!!!
About 3 years ago (2006-2007) my friend and PHD prescribed 1mg of Clonazepam for a short 2 or 3 week bout of anxiety. One of his cute motos at the time was "better living through chemistry". I thought that was funny at the time. The Clonazepam helped me to sleep like I had't experienced in years. I am an active 46 year old male in which I own my own business, have a great marrige (now) after 21 yrs, and have three beautiful daughters!!! With the stress of my own business and some trouble in my marriage, I began taking an avg.of 1mg of Clonazepam every week to get a GREAT night of sleep (mostly on the weekends)until about 2 months ago (June 09). About 6months ago I started to notice dizziness & blurred vision. I went to a PHD and he suspected sinus problems and gave me Sudafed & Nazacourt, it seemed to help occasionally. I continued to take 1mg evry week or so until June. In june I traveled away from my family for 4 days and for the first time, took 1mg every night for 3 nights. I slept GREAT & felt GREAT for the duration. Imediately after returning from Florida, my family & I left for a 1 week camping vacation in Northern Montana. During that 1 week span, I took 2 1mg to sleep GREAT again, & I did indeed! When we returned home & I began a stressful period of work, I completely melted down after not taking any Clonazepam for about 1 1/2 weeks. I did not now what was happening to me, the panic was nothing I had ever experienced. I (for the first time in my career had to leave work & come home & cry on the floor for 1 1/2hours in front of my wife!!!). The Fog, Dizziness & Blurred vision, along with Panic had finally overtaken me. After many visits to the PHD, multiple blood work (OK) and a CT of the brain (OK), I began to think I was losing my mind. I mentioned to 2 different PHDs the possibility of an addiction to Clonazepam??? They both said that because of the small doses of Clonazepam over the last 3yrs, there was no chance of an addiction! I decided to try the Internet for answers, and did I find some!!! Since then, I have began to take .5mg every other day (barely getting by)and I would desparately like to taper off. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I would GREATLY appreciate any useful info, help or intervention. Thank-You Soooooo Very Much for your time! Barely gettin by.......GE in Montana
Hi GE
I have been where you are and know how difficult it is, your wright the best way to go about it is slowly and safely...under medical supervision.
The problem with benzodiazepine is that they are very addictive so one should not stop cold turkey.
But you should know that you will have the withdrawl symptoms wich are very unpleasant but temporary so you will have to hang in there unpleasant as they are but again under medical supervision.
I took benzodiazepine (ativan) for a long time in fact years and getting off them was one heck of a battle the problem with these is that as more as you take them the more you feel the need to take more than the posologie prescribe to have the ''same'' effect hence the addiction factor.
I hope that this was of some help
