Q: can you change from xanax xr to regular xanax to safely taper off the xanax xr.

I'm currently on 2 mg xanax xr in the am and have been so for a week (I went from 1 mg xanax xr which I had been on for about 3 or more weeks).  Also went from .725 mg xanax to help sleep at night to .5 mg per night.  If needed I could also take an extra .25 xanax or .5 xanax if needed to for additional anxiety or sleep when I was still on the l mg xanax xr.  Was initially prescirbed .5 mg xanax  1 x daily by my GP but my phsychiatrist changed it to the higher and xr dosages.

Would like to know how to taper off xanax xr safely without any withdrawal symptoms.  Can you cange from xanax xr to regular xanax to to the taper safely?

Thanks for any info.

Hello Ladynred

Okay...I am a bit confused.  So you currently have two prescriptions...one for regular xanax and one for xanax XR....one is from your GP and one is from your psychiatrist?  Or do I have this wrong?  Do your doctors know that you have two prescriptions?  What is the reason why you wish to taper off the Xanax XR?

I think that you really need to discuss your wishes with both doctors and get a consensus of what you should do next.  You do not want to taper anything on your own...you will need the guidance of your doctors.  This way you can ask what you can expect with any tapering and how to do it.

Does this sound like a plan?

Both the prescriptions are from my psychiatrist.  The xanax xr is to be taken in the morning to last all day and the regular xanax .5 mg is to be taken at bedtime because I've had insomina for almost 2 months which started all the anxiety in the first play.  I want to get off the xanax xr because it is really affecting my memory and also even on the days I sleep I've lost all interest in things I don't find that I have joy in my life any for any of the things which I've always liked to do this can be one of the mental side effects of xanax.  That is why I'd like to start tapering off.

I will be taking to my psychiatrist tomorrow about all this.  It's just that the memory probs are getting worse and so is the lack of feeling or emotion....don't seem to be interested in doing anything even though most of my anxiety is gone.

Thank you for your comment

Oh okay...I do understand a bit better now.  It seems perfectly understandable that you want to taper off as you are experiencing these life changing side effects.  It certainly is a tough balance...to control the anxiety but also to keep your memory working and feel an interest in life.

I wish you the best of luck and please do come back to let us know what happens.  I take xanax rarely but for my phobias...the thing i have noticed is that it seems less effective each time I take it.   Not sure if I am unusual or not.

Take care and thanks for writing back.

Thank you so much for your care and concern.  But I still need to know if the change can be made from xanax xt to just regular xanax so that the taper can be done more slowly.
