anxiety about falling asleep
Basically not a stressed nor anxious person, but have problems falling alseep Scared of not sleeping will make me lie in bed for hours, sleeping only around 3 AM.\
Have taken AMBIAN for short time - worked miracles! But doctor said can't take it long-term. Shifted to VALIUM (or LORAX)a benzodiazepine which helps a lot.
BUT am incurring terrible memory loss which apperantly is associated with this
medicine.
Hi Anne,
You describe yourself as, "not a stressed or anxious person", yet you say you are, "scared of not sleeping". This suggests to me that your mind is active. I wonder what your mind is active about? Your tablets also suggest anxiety - and you have posted your question on the AnxietyConnection site, so, I think you have insight.
Not knowing what the content of your pre-sleeping thoughts are I'm going to speculate that you are ruminating about previous events and/or are thinking about what's coming next. These thoughts are intrusive, so you lay in bed thinking, "I must get to sleep", which is a good way of achieving precisely the opposite.
You need to break up the pattern. If you don't already, try to get into regular bedtime routines. Don't stimulate yourself with TV before bed. Prepare for bed with a relaxing bath, read a book, meditate. During the day try to get some physical exercise - this can have a dramatic effect on sleep.
Good luck
Jerry
