Can Anxiety disorders be precipitated by neuro-chemical imbalances as in depression?

Swimdiveski

I'm concerned, because I've recently been diagnosed with and about to start therapy for a severe anxiety disorder along with an underlying condition of either OCD or ADHD. I know that at times these conditions can co-exist. I remember back at age 11, I was washing my hands until they were bleeding, but was told then that I had "just a nervous disorder and I would outgrow this." As a 42-yr.old male now, I'm wondering how, in addition to therapy, I can begin to resolve this. Both relationships and employment have always been difficult to maintain, despite 8 years of college, two undergraduate degrees, and growing up in a very comfortable environment. I would think that how these circumstances were originally created and reinforced over the years would dictate the best path for treatment. Any insight on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for your question and welcome to Anxiety Connection.com.

The following link will give you some information as to the role the brain plays in the cause of anxiety: http://www.healthcentral.com/anxiety/introduction-000028_2-145.html

As far as how to proceed, it sounds as if you are on the right track. Cognitive beahvioral therapy has been found to be very helpful in treating anxiety. Some people also use medication to help.
