Q: Am i suffering from anxiety??

My dad is a racecar driver, and has been for my whole life and the some.I've always enjoyed watching him race, you could say im his biggest fan. But last summer he go into a pretty bad accident, he hit the wall and flipped a few times, he wasnt hurt at all but of course i was still very shaken up after seeing it. Especially since the race before that his car caught on fire and it wasnt long before the entire car engolfed in flames. And now when i watch him race i feel very anxious, my heart pounds in my chest, and i almost cant breath. i get shaky and very very nervous. This has never happened until last summer. and now it happens frequently, but only when he races. is it all in my head or is this like conditional anxiety?? Is there anything i can do to prevent or treat this??

Hello there

I have to say that I don't think your response is so unusual.  I would be anxious and worried too.  I am really glad your dad was not hurt.  Is this the worst that you have seen?  It seems to be a risky type of work.  Will he continue to race for some time?

If this works you up to see him race can you limit how much you do watch?  Have you told your dad how anxious you are becoming?

If the anxiety is limited to this situation...I am not sure if you have an anxiety disorder but this would be something for a professional to tell you.  If the anxiety is so bad that it is interfering with your day to day functions and you are obsessing then perhaps it is time to talk to someone.

I would talk to your dad though...maybe he can provide some comfort.

Thank you so much for your question and please do come back to let us know how things are going for you.
