Q: Lexapro side effects or something else?

Hi: I have been on Lexapro for about 4 months. I had such unrelenting fatigue in the afternoons when I took the 10 mg in the morning, I switched to taking it at night. That helped. However, I have been having "blank out" periods where my brain literally doesn't work. I space out while answering someone's question, for example, or forget what I am thinking about, mid-thought. It's quite scary. I also have weak muscles. I am a moderate runner--about 15 miles a week. But I can hardly manage 7 or 8 right now and walking the hills of my neighborhood in Seattle--which used to be a part of my exercise plan, is exhausting. Overall, I am also feeling less ambitious and motivated than at any period in my life.

I just turned 37 so was attributing some of these things to age--but I am not THAT old, and these came on fast and furiously! Any ideas if any of these/all of these are related to Lexapro? I have read, to my chagrin, that there are withdrawal symptoms to be experienced if I choose to go off--those seem to include heightened anxiety and irritability--things I was experiencing  over the past winter to a high degree and so thought I needed this medication. I got the medication from my internist and he is slightly concerned because I have had a few diagnoses of low-level cyclical mood/bipolar disorder. Any advice at this point: to stay on or not to stay on...to be concerned or not to be concerned, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

Most people are able to take Lexapro without experiencing side effects, however, some may have mild side effects that usually disappear after taking the medication for a few weeks. Some people may experience side effects for longer periods of time or have side effects that are more severe.

For side effects that last more than a few weeks, you should talk with your doctor and let him or her know how you are feeling. The symptoms you describe could possibly be caused by the Lexapro or there may be some underlying physical condition that is causing the symptoms. Your doctor would be better able to decide if you need additional medical care.

Lexapro can cause withdrawal if stopped suddenly, many times your doctor will decide to wean someone off Lexapro, decreasing the dosage slowly to help avoid symptoms of withdrawal.
