G - The answer appears to depend on who you ask but the overall conclusion is probably that there are other antidepressants out there that cause bigger problems as far as weight gain. The manufacturer does not cite this as a common side effect but there is no data on side effects of sustained use. On a site affiliated with WebMD, data is provided from two research studies investigating use of Lexapro in the treatment of major depression and generalized anxiety disorder. The results showed no greater incidence of significant weight gain than for people who did not receive the medication. However, in the premarketing evaluation of the medication weight gain was considered a frequent event. The problem with this information is that there is no way to establish whether the Lexapro or some other factor caused the weight gain. Finally, on a site where users can comment on their experiences, weight gain does not appear often or seem to be extreme.

All of this having been said, if you have never been treated with antidepressants for depression and GAD before and you have not changed your diet, exercise habits, or other medications then you may want to talk to your physician about your concern.
