Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

Although I am not a medical professional, I can tell you that MAOI inhibitors were the first class of antidepressant medications available. There were also medications, such as Valium available for anxiety.

It is difficult to know exactly what you are asking. Depression and anxiety are two seperate disorders and although both can react positively to antidepressants, there is also anti-anxiety medication and there have been a number of medications over the years to treat people with nervous disorders.

Thank you for your answer!! I guess what i'm asking is, what medication has been on the market the longest that works effectively? Alot of the newer drugs have quite a few dangerous side effects. I heard paxil is now category D in pregnancy. I am currently taking paxil 10mg and I am considering pregnancy. I suffer from anxiety not depression, but the doctor perscribed paxil.

The tricyclic antidepressants were introduce at the same time as the Mao inhibitors

Imipramine (Trofanil) can claim to be the oldest antidepressant.

Hope this answers your question
