Category:Anxiety Drugs

my 26 yr old son takes 4, 1mg klonopin a day when he has the script, runs out taken too many,

I worry he abuses prescription drugs prescribed to him  he runs out way before time taken 3-4 times the ammt. prescribed. he is on adderall and now I found out he is INJECTING STERIODS. He wants to bulk up. He is also drinking with all this and still acts very depressed and moody, that has been going on for years. He starting smoking pot around 14-15 yrs.old I believe he still does some, maybe not the drug of choice right now. Anything he does is never in moderation like working out.He has been in and out of jail and trouble since the age of 16-17 yrs. old. His Father thinks he is just on a health kick and has no problems w/ drugs. I am so afraid that I will get the call one night that he over dosed. Two of his friends in the last year or so did. What do you think?  At times I have wondered if he is Bi-polar, he can go into awful rages, been in trouble for that too. I know he needs prof. help, but is very against it. what do you think?  Thanks for any help, A worried Mom

Gail - Watching your child, no matter what the age, go through this is very painful. Based on your description he seems to be clearly abusing a variety of substances. This is not a "health kick" as his father would like to believe. Given the variety and quantity of substances that he is ingesting it is not surprising that his moods are unstable and his behavior is erratic at times. You are right in your assessment that he needs professional help. If he is reluctant to get it for himself then you should consider asking for a consult with an experienced substance abuse counselor and attending Alanon. Doing so may help you identify strategies for dealing with him and with your own distress.
