Q: I'm 18, is it just anxiety or actually a heart problem?

Now, I have had Acute Stress/Post Traumatic Disorder for about 2 years. I would have panic attacks so bad where I thought I was literally having a heart attack. My arm and chest would go numb and I would have the worst chest pain, so I would have my mother rush me to the E.R. and I couldn't fall asleep at night because I was afraid I was going to die in my sleep. After many checkups and doctor visits I am still not convinced my heart is okay. Now to my real problem, I want to join the Navy, but am afraid my heart will beat to fast during exercise and I will die or pass out from my heart. Can this happen? Can I fix that? Please help! I want to live a better life.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

I can tell you that chest pain and heart palpitations can be a symptom of anxiety. If you have had tests done to make sure your heart is ok, then the symptoms you are feeling may be caused by the anxiety. Treating anxiety should help and I would suggest speaking with a doctor about what types of treatments might be best for you.

Since you want to go into the military, you might also want to speak with a recruiter and find out how a diagnosis of anxiety would impact your ability to enlist.
