Q: 75 yr mom going thru withdrawal from Avinza. Told Vistaril will help till out of system.True?

My mom has scoliosis & has been treated for about 10 yrs for it. She started having chronic pain right hip down.He never ran any test on the hip & said it was a pinched nerve but with the back he couldn't get to it.His answer was morphine & graduated to 120mg twice a day. We finally took her to another dr & he saw right away that there was a major problem with the hip. She had a severely fractured hip that had been fractured for quite some time because the bone had deterioated. The ball was completely gone. An orthopedic surgeon just did a hip replacement & she is now in rehab doing great with no pain. Obviously we want her off of the Avinza but she is going thru withdrawal. They are giving her Vistaril 3 times a day to compensate for the Avinza. They assure me it will only take days to get the Avinza out of her system & she will be fine. I was always told it took gradually coming off of it & taking awhile. Are they correct that this will do the trick & in the days timeframe instead of going back on it & working off of it for more time?

Thank you for your question.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with withdrawal from Avinza and would not have an answer for your question. You may find more information on the Chronic Pain site here at Health Central.
