Q: I am prescribed xanax and have been for 12 yrs. My counsler says my levels keep going up and down drastically. Why? I take 4mg a day and have been for a long time. why are my levels changing?

They say that my levels will be in the 300's then they say the 3000's how is that possible? I take the same amount everyday. I think she just wants me off of them

I've been taking Xanex for about 8 years and I was told by my doc that it is NOT to be taken as a daily medication, especially multiple times daily. Its supposed to be taken only if you think you are going to have a panic attack in certain situations or maybe if you cant sleep one night. 4mg a day is ALOT. Be careful. Xanex is addicting. I was taking maybe 1 - 2 mg per week then slowly started taking it daily. Had to cut back drastically because everyday felt like a foggy xanex haze... and I was taking nowhere near 4mg per day. There are points throughout the day, everyday of my life, that I could justify taking a xanex, but I dont take it.  I've learned to control my anxiety in some situations instead of relying on a drug, but I still need the xanex about once or twice per month. I wait until its truely needed in "panic" situations.
