I cant seem to take deep slow breaths during a anxiety attack because it makes me feel like im struggling to breath so i start to hyperventilate... Anyone know of any other techniques besides the slow deeps breaths that work?

Hi there!

I am no expert but I do have the same problem. I keep repeating to myself that the symptoms I feel is not life threatening and not dangerous in any way.  I also repeat the words "I am calm and relaxed". Also the knowledge that it will pass in a few minutes gives me some assurance.

I hope it will work for you.

All the best!

Hi! Johannes offered some good suggestions that are worth giving a try. If you are not already seeing a therapist you may want to consider doing so because this is typically the quickest way to learn a range of different strategies. If you are more of a do-it-yourself type person you may want to get a copy of The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook by Davis, Eschelman, and McKay. This workbook has a number of different strategies that you can try to see which one fits you best.
