Q: Dealing with irrational outburst in children

A close friend's eight-year-old daughter will explode into irrational outbursts and crying when someone crosses her or interferes with something she wants to do and her three brothers must walk on eggshells to avoid setting her off. We cannot talk to my friend about it because she says she is the same way and the unverbalized conclusion to her statement is that everyone needs to try to understand them. I do not see it as a healthy coping response but am at loss to know what to say or do.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I am not a medical professional and cannot give medical advice.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much that you can do in this situation, other than speaking with your friend about the situation. It is up to your friend to resolve her daughter's behavior. Right now it sounds as if she is simply making excuses for the behavior, even though it is disruptive to her family life if her brothers feel they must "walk on eggshells."

Maybe you and several other friends/family members can get together and work together to come up with a strategy for talking with your friend.
