Q: Fear of something worse than anxiety

Four months ago I was suffering alarming physical symptoms. I was evaluated over a period of weeks during which I developed severe anxiety regarding the status of my health. Although the results of my evaluation were normal the experience triggered a dramatic increase in my anxiety, and I began suffering a wide variety of bothersome anxiety-related physical symptoms that continue to perpetuate high levels of anxiety every day. I have visited my doctor several times in the past two months to find solutions through trial and error. Unfortunately nothing has worked yet. To make matters monumentally worse she has mentioned several serious medical conditions she feels I need to be evaluated for by a specialist even though she believes my conditions are caused by anxiety alone. I have a job but I can't afford to pay for a specialist and I have to wait a few months to hear if I am approved for the County assistance programs I have applied for. So here I am day after day scared to death I am suffering from a serious condition but unable to pay for the services to determine if I am or not. Understanding how anxiety causes my symptoms would reduce my fears of unexplained symptoms. However my primary care doctor and the ER personnel simply state my symptoms are caused by anxiety without explaining how. In order to understand my symptoms I have researched them myself which ALWAYS results in learning about serious diseases and conditions which increases my anxiety further. At this point I don't see how I will find peace of mind. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anyone outh there that wouldn't mind talking about it with me? I would appreciate it beyond words.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

It sounds like your doctor is doing the right thing. Although, based on what you have been told, it is indicated that your symptoms are caused by anxiety, it is always a good idea to make sure your symptoms are not being caused by some physical condition.

Hopefully, you will be approved for insurance shortly and will be able to get an answer to your questions. You don't mention what types of physical symptoms you are currently experiencing so it would be impossible to give you additional information on these. However, anxiety often causes problems such as chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, feeling faint, rashes and other physical symptoms. It is your body's reaction to the stress and everyone experiences anxiety a little differently.

As you can see, there are a number of physical symptoms associated with anxiety.

I hope this helps

Hi there

Eileen has already given you some excellent advice and suggestions.  I am just going to chime in with a couple of ideas.  First of all...may we ask what symptoms you are experiencing?  As Eileen mentions, anxiety can cause a wide variety of physical symptoms.  Anxiety can be very hard on the body.  It truly can be difficult to tell which symptoms are anxiety related and which are caused by medical illness.  And in some cases, a medical illness symptom can be exacerbated by anxiety.

Here is my suggestion.  Keep a log of your symptoms and when they occur and how severe they are.  Try to look for triggers or patterns.  Are your symptoms consistent over time or are they intermittent?  Do you feel anxiety when your symptoms occur?  Does anything help to relieve your symptoms?

Please let us know how you are doing in the days to come.  I hope you find out the cause of your symptoms once and for all.
