Q: i currently take xanex .25mg twice a day for anxiety. Usually I take both at the same time. Next

DMD- I suspect that you are right about having developed a tolerance for the Xanax. Although I am not a physician I work with lots of clients who take this medication for anxiety management. I am curious about whether you have ever been seen by a psychiatrist for management of your anxiety. There are a lot of medications used to treat anxiety and while your primary physician may be familiar with many of them there may be some strategies that he/she is not familiar or comfortable with. Please have an honest discussion with your primary about how you have been using the Xanax and see if he/she is comfortable with a one time use of a higher quantity.

Hi dmd1031,

I agree with Dr. Wirtz that consulting a Psychiatrist is the wisest course of action, but do keep in mind that 3 pills at .25 mg. is still a very low dose of Xanax. I'm not a physician either, but I know what my favorite Psychiatrist prescribes/recommends to my clients (and they almost never take the amount he recommends), and it is well beyond the amount you are talking about. So many of my clients who take these drugs worry so much about what they take that I think it  actually counteracts the helpfulness of the drug!

If you are worried, you might want to focus some of your energy on all the other non-drug interventions available too...such as: abdominal breathing, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

Have a wonderful trip to Florida!!

I was deathly afraid of flying for years. I would worry months in advance and once I made it to where I was going, I worried about having to fly back. Never really got to enjoy much. Lexapro has been a lifesaver. It does have side effects, like non orgasmic, so the doc put me on wellbutrin twice a day to help, and it did. Happier and feel better.
