Q: My daughter is 16 and experiences anxiety and panic attacks?

I totally believe that it's caused by  fluorescent lighting. What is the cure or whom would I take her to see a Doctor or eye doctor?

The answer is to see a psychologist who specialises in stress-related conditions. During the assessment, your daughter will be asked a number of questions relating to the background of the problem, her current situation generally - including the state of her health, school, friends, concerns, etc. From this, the psychologist will be able to determine the best approach for your daughter.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most commonly used psychological intervention. It is part educational (understanding why you feel the way you do) and part interactive (exercises to modify thinking, increase relaxation). It may also involve some in vivo work where the therapist accompanies their client to the situations that cause the problem.

The good news is that your daughter is young and probably more resilient than might at first be thought. To find a psychologist in your area use this link.

Anxiety and panic attacks can be dealt with by your local mental health dept. or you can get started by seeing a regular doctor. The doctor will usually refer you to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or a therapist. In my opinion,  flourescant lighting is a possible trigger for your daughter, just like the thought of bridges is a trigger for me. It would only be something that a therapist would be able to help with. I believe that a lot of cognitive behavioral therapy is being done these days to treat anxieties aside from medications that are prescribed.

Hope this helps,

When it comes to Anxiety, Hyper tension, , and Panic attacks this is a VERY scarey issue. The bottom line is a proffesional in this feild really needs to see her. She needs not to experiment with new medications because of side effect issues. I personelly have Anxiety and panic attacks. I have (PTSD) Post tramatic stress disorder. I have been seing a proffesional for 10 years. I did the therapy thing and it was very ineffictive. I saw a Phsyc and they gave drugs that made me ill and was prescribed valium 5mg 3 times a day." PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING VALIUM" it is a DANGEROUS DRUG. I have been on xanax .5 mg 4 per day or as needed for 4 years and has been very effective.

I would strongly consider checking into Xanax .25mg 1 per day as needed for panic attacks. As parents you should moniter and keep presceiption and only give her a few incase.Seek your Doctors opion and make appointment ASAP.  This is scarey and you should try to change your lights, but I feel that is a small part of the issue. I have lived with this for 11 years and have been and still am living it.  Good luck!
