Why do I become so hypertensive (168/112) during my panic attacks?

I am in my 50's and this is my third bout with severe panic attacks over the past 5 1/2 years.  This first episode did not cause the hypertension, but the second and my current episode have caused hypertension.  The last time about 4 years ago, my hypertension left after the panic went away.  This time my BP is even worse (168/112).  I have never been hypertensive until the panic sets in.  What are the dangers?  I am taking Hyzaar 50 mg/HCTZ 12.5 mg and Tenormin 12.5 mg twice a day to help with the tachycardia.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Nancy,

You mentioned the medications you are taking for the tachycardia, but you didn't mention if you were taking any medication for the anxiety/panic attacks? There are medications that are prescribed for Anxiety that react badly with some foods and other medicines and they cause hypertension. You can read about that here.

Have you mentioned this to your doctor? That the hypertension comes on at the onset of a panic attack? Has he given you any reason? Online sites are great for getting the information you need to ask all the right questions, but they should never take the place of your doctor's solid medical advice.

Take care and stay in touch. Let us know how you are doing!
