Question

How do you stop taking Effexor XR?

I've been on Effexor XR 75mg, recently reduced to 37.5mg with the intention to d'c the drug completely (I was on it for hot flashes only). The Nurse Practitioner told me to take the 37.5 daily for 1 wk. then qod for a week & then discontinue it. Is this the proper way to stop this med? I've had occasional dizziness if I wait too long between doses.  Do you have a possible range of time that could last?  Thank you for any help with these questions.

Hi Brenda,

Thank you for your question. The regimen that the nurse practitioner used is common, but if you experience side effects after a dose decrease, you should contact the prescriber to find out if it can be decreased at a slower rate. Every medication affects every person differently, so you won't know until you try it. You had mentioned that you experience side effects if you wait to long between doses. Hopefully you won't experience that with the lower dose, because you're not missing the dose, it's just less than you had been taking before. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey

I am having the same problem myself.  I took the 37.5 for a week and finished the last pill about a week ago.  I feel light headed and dizzy all the time. I am just wondering how long this will last.
