Q: Hi. My husband from time to time suffers from heightened stress and anxiety due to work related issu

He feels like he is "losing control" "feels hopeless" to quote him directly. During this period often wakes up worrying and can't relax to go back to sleep. For the past 2 weeks this has been going on and getting worse. Usually the work issues go away in time, but I feel this extra stress is affecting him physically as well. Do you think taking some medication for a while will help? And if so, which would you suggest?

Dear kday - Based on your description of how your husband feels it is possible that anxiety and depression may both be present. If he has not been seen by a mental health professional please encourage him to do so. Anxiety and depression commonly appear together and simply treating the anxiety may miss an important component of your husband's condition. He may want to go to the Manage section of the MyDepressionConnection.com site to learn more about how depression presents in most adults. Medications can be very helpful if the right one is being used!

SmileDear Kday,

My husband has had a very stressfull job for 7 years now. It has taken a toll on his health. He has high blood pressure and is on medicine. He has made the decision to join a different company.

This is not always an option as it was not for him for the last 7 years. As far as medication only his phycision or a phychiatrist can make that decision. At best he should see his doctor regarding his stress at his job. To help my husband I realized that he needs time to destress after work. Quiet time with his favorite cold beverage. I provide a compassionate ear and always offer a hug hello. Glad you are home honey works wonders when a husband if stressed at work. Remind him you are always there to support him, and appreciate the efforts he puts twards his job to help support his household.  I hope all goes well for you.Smile
