Q: Elderly mothers anxiety seems worse even tho taking ativan, what else is available?

91 year old mother, fractured pelvis, very nervous, constant need to use bathroom, started her on Ativan about a month ago, seemed to help but now Mother is in rehab at a nursing home and her anxiety has increased dramatically. She won't sit still even tho her legs will not hold her up. Aides are aggravated with having to put her on bedside commode every 10 minutes or so, crying, confused, can't seem to sleep.

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

Recent research shows that one out of every five of the elderly suffer from anxiety and either require or may benefit from treatment. There are many different reasons that could cause this anxiety, including: illness, change in lifestyle/situation, increase in medication or side effect of medication.

It sounds as if you should speak with your mother's doctor to determine what might be causing the anxiety at this time and if there are additional measures the doctor can take to help ease your mother's level of stress and anxiety.
