Q: Celexa is making my anxiey worse! I can't sleep, feel more anxious, jaw aches, and muscles tense!

Can you tell me what is the best drug for anxiety. I have had anxiety since I have been a kid. My doctor just perscribed me Celexa 2 days ago. 20 mg once a day. He told me to give it a week and I don't think I can. I feel worse!  I have tried different things like anitripilyn, Paxil and Zanax. Zanax worked for me before I had children and now that I have anxiety again after I have had my 3 kids, my doctor doesn't seem to want to perscribe it to me. I know It can be habbit forming but, I was on it for years and stopped without problem before I had kids. Is there something else that works like that. I need something to calm my anxiety and to help me sleep and Celexa isn't doing either of those. I feel like I am ready to jump out of my skin. I can't stand it. Will these side effects go away or should I call me doctor tomorrow to perscribe me something else. I don't feel like trying all these meds either.  Thanks

Thank you for your question and welcome to AnxietyConnection.com.

I hope that you are now feeling better. Sometimes medications have side effects that will last for the first week or two of taking them. However, if you are having side effects that impact your ability to function, you should contact your doctor. (It sounds as if you are.)

I am not a health professional and could not tell you what to do. Your doctor would be the best person to answer whether you should discontinue the medication or not. Please talk with your doctor about your experiences on this medication.

Let me know how it is going.

heidi, i had the same experience with celexa all i can say is my mom took it and it took 9 days i tried it and it took effect in 4 days but it took effect and i didnt even realize it I just felt calm and my thoughts were clear and not so fast and urgent as they were the day before I am no doctor but i would recomend giving it time and don't be anxious about your anxiety try to relax and be in a peaceful enviroment, go for a walk, listen to music, just focus on you. If celexa does'nt take in a couple weeks then maybe you can give your dr. more info toward your relief. At any rate i wish you well. My grandfather always said: don't try to sum it all up at once.
